Day 1 arrival Ulan Bator
You arrive in the Mongolian capital. Depending on when you get in you can visit some sites such as the central Sukhbaatar Square, the Museum of National History, and the most important monastery in the country, the Gandan Monastery. This monastery, known locally as Gandantegchilin, is the only monastery that remained functioning during the Soviet rule, although it was primarily a museum. Since 1990 it has regained its religious function.Day 2 Ulan Bator - Baga Gazriin Chuluu
Today you leave the capital and travel south to the Gobi Desert. Along the way the scenery will continue to get drier and more desolate. The first stop is Baga Gazriin Chuluu. Here you will find ancient rock formations where you can climb and hike and see ancient rock paintings. You will spend the night in a traditional ger camp. In the evening, the wood stove is stocked and early the next morning somebody comes in silently to restoke the fire, a ritual that will be repeated each morning.Day 4 Tsagaan Suvargaa - Yol Valley
Today you will visit the Gurvansaikhan National Park in South Gobi where there are a number of remarkable natural phenomena. One of the most beautiful places in Mongolia is the Yol Valley, a glacier sandwiched between two high cliffs. It is an unexpected frozen area in the middle of the Gobi Desert. You can walk here and maybe see some of the vultures the valley is named for; yol translates to “vulture.”Day 5 Yol Valley - Khongor Sand Dunes
The Khongor Sand Dunes are known as the "Singing Sands." The dunes extend over an area of 180 kilometers and are sometimes 80 meters high. Between the dunes are fertile green strips along the Khongoriin Gol River. Again, you can walk here and slide down the dunes. You can also visit a camel farm.Day 6 Khongor Sand Dunes - Bayanzag
The famous red sandstone cliffs of Bayanzag are where the first dinosaur eggs were found in 1922 by the American paleontologist Roy Chapman. He also found many dinosaur bones, evidence that dinosaurs once roamed this area. Now there is a small dinosaur museum you can visit in Bayanzag.Day 9 Orkhon - Kharkorin
One of the cultural highlights of Mongolia is Kharkorin, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, better known as Karakorum. The city was built in 1235 and was the capital of the famous Mongol Empire until Kublai Khan moved the capital to Beijing. Kharkorin is located in the Orkhon Valley, the heart of the Mongolian culture. The city itself doesn’t have much to see, but you can visit the famous Erdene Zuu Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia.Day 11 Tsenkher - Terkhiin Tsagameer via Tsetserleg
Your next stop is the beautiful Terkhiin Tsagaan, also called the "Great White Lake," situated at 2000 meters of elevation. This is one of the most beautiful lakes in Mongolia. You can walk to the top of a volcanic crater at nearly 3000 meters’ elevation and see the many herds of horses and sheep grazing around the lake.Day 12 Terkhiin Tsagaan - Shine Ider
Today you drive to the province of Khovsgol and stay in a ger camp in the village of Shine Ider. On the way you travel through the mountains of Khangai and stop briefly in the town of Jargalant. Here you will find a completely run-down monastery; there is no money to repair the many monasteries destroyed during the Soviet domination. There are Buddhist ceremonies held regularly in a nearby ger.Day 13 Shine Ider - Khovsgol via Moron
One of the highlights of a visit to Mongolia is the beautiful Lake Khovsgol with an area of 2760 square kilometers. You are now far removed from the Gobi Desert and in the land of taiga forests, pastures, and icy mountain streams. The immense lake is surrounded by high mountains where yaks, horses and reindeer roam. There are many Buryatten, Darkhan and Tsaatan nomads who live in the woods around the lake. You will spend the night in a ger camp.Day 14 Khovsgol lake
You have all day today to walk around the beautiful Lake Khovsgol, one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in the world. Along the lake you will see many log cabins in addition to gers, a reminder that Siberia is near. You will also see teepees belonging to the Tsaatan, the reindeer nomads. This group, of whom there are only about four hundred living in Mongolia, actually live further in the Darkhad Depression, about three days’ walk from the lake. Some Tsaatan, however, come with their reindeer to the shores of the lake hoping to earn some money through tourism. This is understandable given the difficult and impoverished life that they live in the Mongolian taiga, but, unfortunately, it can be devastating for the reindeer. The leaves they eat don’t grow here around the lake and therefore many reindeer don’t survive.Day 15 Khovsgol - Khutug Undur
Today you begin to slowly make your way back to Ulan Bator. The first stop is the county town of Moron, where you then continue on to Khutug Undur.Day 16 Khutug Undur - Amarbayasgalant
Amabaysgalant Khiid is one of the finest and largest Buddhist monasteries in the country and, since the democratic revolution in the 1990’s, is again in use. It is one of the few monasteries that wasn’t completely destroyed during the Soviet regime. In the morning you can attend a service in the temple.Day 17 Amarbayasgalant - Ulan Bator via Khustai national park
Today you drive back to Ulan Bator. En route you will visit the Khustai National Park which is home to the endangered Przewalski horse, the only remaining species of truly wild horse in the world. They are also called Takhi horses. They had become extinct in the wild in the 1960’s, but in 1992, 15 horses were brought from western zoos and released in their natural habitat. Today there are some 250 horses in the park. There are other wild animals that can be found here, as well, including gazelles , wolves, deer, and many bird species. There are also many nomads living in the park, and you can get acquainted with their lifestyle. You can also find Turkish tombstones that are over a thousand years old.Day 18 Ulan Bator - Terelj
Today you travel to another park, the beautiful Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. On the way you will stop at a newly built monument honoring Dzjenghiz Khan. You will have lunch in a ger in the park, where you will also spend the night. In the afternoon you can walk and admire the beautiful alpine landscape. Here, the average elevation is 1600 meters and the highest peaks are 2900 meters.Day 19 Terelj - Ulan Bator
Today you return to the Mongolian capital for your last afternoon and evening. Ulan Bator will look like a sprawling metropolis compared to vast Mongolian wilderness that you have now seen.Day 20 departure Ulan Bator
